Odisha CM Mohan Majhi Announces ₹4 Lakh Compensation for Journalist Killed in Road Accident

Bhubaneswar: Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi announces compensation for journalist on Friday approved financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the family of senior journalist Sheela Pattanayak, who was killed in a tragic road accident in this month.

The ex-gratia support will be extended from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, the Chief Minister confirmed, responding to widespread appeals from journalist bodies and civil society groups.

CM Pays Tribute to Journalist’s Professional Integrity

Expressing deep grief over the untimely death, the Chief Minister paid tribute to Sheela Pattanayak’s dedication to journalism. He said her commitment to honest, responsible reporting and her sense of professional duty would always be remembered with respect.

He added that the government stands in solidarity with her bereaved family during this difficult time.

Details of the Fatal Road Accident

The fatal incident occurred on January 6 near Pipili Mangalapur Chhak. According to sources, a speeding bus struck the scooter on which Sheela Pattanayak and her friend were travelling near Mangalpur Chhak.

Sheela sustained critical injuries and died on the spot due to the impact. Her companion was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition but later succumbed to her injuries.

Support Following Demands from Media Fraternity

In the aftermath of the accident, several journalist associations and civil society organisations expressed condolences and demanded immediate support for the deceased journalist’s family.

Responding to these concerns, the Chief Minister directed authorities to provide prompt financial assistance to help the family cope with the sudden and irreparable loss.

Media Community Welcomes the Decision

Members of the media fraternity welcomed the Chief Minister’s announcement, describing it as a gesture of solidarity and recognition of the risks journalists face while performing their professional duties.

Many also renewed calls for stricter road safety measures across Odisha to prevent similar tragedies in the future, stressing the need for accountability and safer commuting conditions for all citizens.
