PURI: The Snana Yatra 2026 was celebrated with immense religious fervour at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri on Monday, drawing thousands of devotees to witness one of the most significant rituals in the annual Rath Yatra calendar. The ceremonial bathing of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra was performed at the Snana Mandap amid Vedic chants, devotional music and traditional temple rituals.
The annual festival marks an important spiritual milestone, signalling the beginning of the final preparations for the world-famous Rath Yatra.
Snana Yatra 2026 Marks the Beginning of Anasara Rituals
As per long-standing temple traditions, the sibling deities were brought from the sanctum sanctorum to the Snana Mandap through the elaborate Pahandi procession. The Holy Trinity was then bathed with 108 pitchers of sanctified water drawn from the sacred Suna Kua (Golden Well) inside the temple premises.
Highlights of the ceremony included:
- The traditional Pahandi procession carrying the deities to the Snana Mandap.
- Jalabhishek performed using 108 pitchers of sacred water from the Suna Kua.
- Chanting of Vedic mantras, devotional kirtans and blowing of conch shells throughout the ritual.
Following the ceremonial bath, the deities are believed to fall ill and enter the Anasara period, during which they remain away from public view for about a fortnight. During this period, temple servitors perform special rituals and offer traditional herbal treatments before the deities return for Nabajaubana Darshan.
Why Snana Yatra 2026 Holds Special Significance
Snana Yatra is one of the most revered festivals in the Jagannath tradition and serves as the spiritual bridge between the annual bathing ceremony and the grand Rath Yatra. The observance reflects centuries-old customs that continue to attract devotees from across India and abroad.
The second-order impact of the festival extends beyond its religious importance. It boosts pilgrimage tourism, supports the local economy and preserves Odisha’s rich cultural heritage through rituals that have been followed for generations.
With the completion of Snana Yatra, preparations now shift toward the Anasara rituals and the much-awaited Nabajaubana Darshan, after which Lord Jagannath and the sibling deities will embark on their annual journey to the Gundicha Temple during the world-renowned Rath Yatra.
