Kolkata: Actor Mithun Chakraborty has been named as the cultural advisor to the West Bengal government, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Friday. The announcement came during the foundation stone ceremony of the proposed Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town, on the outskirts of Kolkata.

The film centre is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore, with funding already sanctioned by the state Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The project is being planned as a major facility for cinema, entertainment and cultural activities.

Adhikari also said the government would leave the design of the centre to experts from the Bengali film industry and would not interfere in the process.

Mithun Chakraborty Named Cultural Advisor to Bengal Government

Mithun Chakraborty will take up the cultural advisory role as the state steps up efforts to strengthen its film and cultural infrastructure.

Speaking at the event, Adhikari said people associated with the film sector should have the freedom to shape the project. He said the government’s role should be to provide support rather than interfere in creative decisions.

The Chief Minister also directed Information and Culture Secretary Soumitra Mohan and WBHIDCO Managing Director Bibhu Goel to consult the Uttam Kumar centenary committee and work towards finalising the design.

Uttam Kumar Film Centre to Have Three Sections

The proposed centre will have three major sections.

The first section will include two cinema halls with 750 seats, along with a preview theatre, food court and parking facilities.

The second section will feature a 1,000-seat auditorium and an open-air theatre for cultural programmes.

The third section will focus on modern film and entertainment technology. It will include laboratories and studios for animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, extended reality and film post-production.

Rs 25 Crore Film Centre Planned in New Town

The state government has already completed soil testing and site selection for the project. The Detailed Project Report process is currently under way.

According to the Chief Minister, construction agencies under the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation will begin work after the monsoon season.

The film centre is being developed as part of the celebrations marking the birth centenary of legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar. The project is intended to leave a lasting cultural and cinematic legacy beyond the centenary celebrations.

Tollywood Personalities to Be Felicitated

Adhikari also announced that prominent personalities from the Bengali film industry will be felicitated during the ongoing Uttam Kumar centenary celebrations.

He said the selection of the honourees would be left to a committee comprising people from the film industry, with the government staying out of the selection process.
