Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution urging the Central Government to ensure the clear inclusion of caste-based data in the census to provide a detailed picture of communities and their social status.
Minister for Public Works Department Adhav Arjuna said the exercise should benefit every citizen in Tamil Nadu and help establish a system to identify communities and ensure that eligible people receive government benefits.
The resolution comes amid concerns over how caste information would be classified and recorded during the census.
Tamil Nadu Caste-Based Census Demand
Adhav Arjuna said there was no clear identification mechanism for a caste-based census and argued that a general classification could undermine the importance of Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Most Backward Classes (MBC).
He said the census should provide clearer information about different communities and their social status.
According to the minister, the existing census form’s 40 questions include a drop-down option that does not provide adequate facilities to identify the relevant community divisions.
Assembly Members Raise Concerns
Members of the Tamil Nadu Assembly said a census without clearer community-level information could fail to achieve its intended purpose.
They argued that the exercise should provide a clearer picture of the population and social status of different communities so that government policies and welfare measures can be better targeted.

The minister said the census exercise should not remain limited to collecting general demographic information.
He called for a method that could help identify communities and determine how government benefits could reach eligible people in the state.
The Assembly members also stressed the need for a clearer framework to ensure that census data can effectively support people and communities.
The resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly now urges the Central Government to provide a clear mechanism for recording caste-based information as part of the census process.
