New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed condolences over the deaths of eight people from Odisha after a car carrying devotees was swept away by a rain-swollen stream near the Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda, Madhya Pradesh.
Modi also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased person.
PM Modi Announces ₹2 Lakh PMNRF Assistance
The Prime Minister described the incident in Agar Malwa district as extremely painful and offered condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the next of kin of each deceased person will receive ₹2 lakh from PMNRF.
Those injured in the incident will receive ₹50,000 in financial assistance.
PMO Statement on Madhya Pradesh Accident
The PMO said the incident was extremely painful and conveyed condolences to those who lost family members.
The statement also confirmed the financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for each deceased person’s next of kin and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Eight Odisha Residents Killed in Stream Accident
Police said at least eight people died after their car was swept away while attempting to cross a rain-swollen stream near the Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda.
The deceased included three children, two women and three men.
All the victims were residents of Odisha and had travelled from Ujjain to visit the temple.
The identities of the deceased were still being ascertained, according to the information provided by police.
How the Agar Malwa Accident Happened
According to Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Soni, the incident occurred when the vehicle carrying the devotees attempted to cross the stream despite strong water currents.
Administrative officials and rescue teams reached the location after the accident and launched a rescue operation.
Preliminary Findings Point to Strong Current
Preliminary findings suggest that the driver may have attempted to cross the stream hastily amid the strong current.
The vehicle was subsequently swept away by the rain-swollen stream, resulting in the deaths of all eight occupants.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined by the authorities.
Rescue Operation Launched
Following the incident, local administration officials and rescue teams reached the spot.
A rescue operation was launched to locate and recover those inside the vehicle.
The incident occurred amid water flowing strongly through the stream following rainfall in the area.
Odisha Families to Receive Ex-Gratia Assistance
With the Prime Minister’s announcement, the next of kin of each of the eight deceased Odisha residents will be eligible for ₹2 lakh from PMNRF.
The announcement provides immediate financial assistance to the families following the tragic Madhya Pradesh car accident.
The injured will receive ₹50,000, according to the PMO.
