Gwalior: At least 14 people have died and around 40 others have been injured after a paddy-laden truck lost control and crashed into devotees near Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Sunday. The accident occurred at around 1:30 am on October 18 as large numbers of pilgrims gathered to visit the temple during Navratri.
The truck reportedly broke through police barricades on a steep road before running into devotees waiting for darshan. It subsequently struck the temple’s entrance gate and outer wall. Two police personnel were also among those injured in the incident.
Rescue teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several victims sustained serious injuries, including fractures, while medical teams continued to assess their condition.
PM Narendra Modi Announces Financial Assistance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and offered condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The Prime Minister announced ex-gratia assistance of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the family of each deceased person. Those injured in the accident will receive ₹50,000 each.
The assistance is intended to provide financial support to families affected by the tragedy and help injured victims during their recovery.
How Did the Truck Crash Into Devotees?
According to preliminary information, the truck was carrying paddy and travelling towards the temple from the Chhinor side when the driver lost control on a steep slope.
Heavy vehicles were reportedly restricted on the route because of the large number of devotees visiting the temple during the festival.
The truck allegedly breached police barricades before moving downhill and striking people gathered along the roadside. It then crashed into the temple’s entrance structure, adding to the destruction at the site.
Authorities are investigating how the vehicle entered the restricted stretch and whether a mechanical fault, vehicle condition or other factors contributed to the accident. The exact cause has not yet been conclusively established.
Driver and Truck Owner Under Investigation
Police have detained the truck driver and owner as part of the investigation, according to the information provided.
Investigators are examining the circumstances of the crash, including the vehicle’s movement through the restricted area and the effectiveness of traffic-control arrangements.
The Regional Transport Office is also expected to examine the truck to help determine whether a technical problem contributed to the accident.
Officials will need to establish the sequence of events and identify any lapses before responsibility can be determined.
Grieving Families Seek Information About Injured Relatives
The accident has left families of the victims struggling to obtain information about their loved ones.
A grieving mother reportedly expressed frustration over delays in receiving information about her injured son. Her concerns have highlighted the difficulties families can face when several casualties are taken to hospitals following a major accident.
Timely communication from hospitals and authorities is particularly important in such emergencies, allowing relatives to identify injured people and understand their medical condition.
Questions Raised Over Temple Crowd Safety
The accident has raised concerns about road safety and crowd management around major religious sites during festivals.
Sheetla Mata Temple attracts large numbers of devotees during Navratri. When pedestrian traffic increases, restrictions on heavy vehicles and effective enforcement of barricades become particularly important.
Authorities are investigating how the truck crossed the checkpoint despite restrictions on heavy vehicle movement.
The findings could help determine whether additional traffic controls, stronger barriers or other safety measures are needed to protect pilgrims visiting the temple during major religious gatherings.
