Mumbai: Reliance Industries has said it welcomes competition from Elon Musk’s Starlink in India’s satellite communications market, while insisting that all companies must comply with Indian laws and regulatory requirements.

In a statement published on X on Friday, Reliance said its own satellite services under Jio were also awaiting government clearances. The response followed Musk’s allegations that business interests were obstructing Starlink’s entry into the Indian market.

The exchange has brought renewed attention to the regulatory process for satellite internet services in India, where companies are seeking permission to begin commercial operations.

What Did Reliance Say About Starlink?

Reliance said India’s investment environment welcomes both domestic and international businesses that bring innovation and benefit consumers. However, it stressed that all companies must follow the same legal and regulatory framework.

The company said it had never feared competition and pointed to Jio’s entry into India’s telecom market in 2016 as an example of competing in an established industry.

According to Reliance, Jio has grown to serve more than 530 million customers over the past decade.

The company also clarified that Jio’s satellite services were awaiting clearances, reinforcing its position that regulatory requirements apply to Indian and foreign applicants alike.

Why Did Elon Musk Criticise Reliance?

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has criticised the delays affecting Starlink’s commercial launch in India. In posts on X, he alleged that vested interests were attempting to restrict competition and questioned whether Reliance’s position in the telecom market was influencing Starlink’s entry.

Musk argued that allowing Starlink to compete would give Indian consumers more choices. He also suggested that stronger competition could reduce the profits of existing telecom operators without necessarily threatening their businesses.

In another post, Musk sarcastically addressed Mukesh Ambani as “Prime Minister Ambani” while questioning the barriers facing Starlink.

These statements represent Musk’s allegations and opinions. They do not, by themselves, establish that Reliance caused delays in the regulatory approval process.

What Is the Government’s Position on Satellite Internet?

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that India does not intend to permit a monopoly in satellite communications.

The minister stated that three satellite communication providers were in line for final approval for commercial licences. He also said operators must satisfy security requirements before beginning commercial operations.

Scindia has indicated that the framework for satellite communication spectrum pricing was nearing finalisation. Licensing alone does not mean a company can immediately launch commercial services.

The approval process is therefore a key factor in determining when providers can begin serving Indian customers.

How Could Competition Affect Indian Consumers?

Satellite internet could provide another connectivity option, particularly in locations where conventional broadband infrastructure is difficult to deploy. The extent of its benefits will depend on service availability, pricing, performance and regulatory approvals.

Starlink’s entry could introduce additional competition in the satellite broadband segment. Jio is also seeking to develop its satellite services, while other operators are pursuing opportunities in the market.

However, satellite broadband and conventional mobile services have different infrastructure and cost structures. Their relative affordability and suitability will depend on the customer’s location and connectivity needs.

What Happens Next?

The next steps depend on the completion of the necessary security clearances and the applicable regulatory processes.

Reliance has publicly welcomed Starlink as a competitor, while Musk continues to question the barriers facing the service. The government has said operators must satisfy the relevant requirements before commercial operations can begin.

For consumers, the key developments to watch will be the timing of approvals, the availability of services and the prices offered by providers. Until commercial launches are authorised, claims about future pricing or market share should be treated cautiously.
