Bhubaneswar: The budget session of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die on Thursday, three days before it was scheduled to end.

According to reports, the House held a lengthy discussion on the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Bill that lasted more than 12 hours. Despite resistance from the BJD, the law was enacted by the Assembly at 4:29 a.m. today with the majority of the ruling party. The ruling party offered 18 amendments, 12 of which were opposed by the BJD party.

BJD MLA Arun Sahoo questioned the bill’s legality, claiming that it was a modification to the 1989 bill, which was introduced in 2024. He also stated that the bill’s legitimacy would be contested by the Supreme Court in the future.

The Assembly’s sessions began on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and ended at 7:05 a.m. on Thursday. The House also witnessed heated exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition.
