Veteran actor-director Manoj Kumar passes away at 87

Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away in Mumbai this morning at the age of 87. Widely known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic films, he was a revered figure in Indian cinema. His immense contributions earned him prestigious honors, including the Padma Shri and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Born Harikrishna Giri Goswami, Manoj Kumar played a pivotal role in shaping patriotic storytelling in Bollywood. His iconic films, such as Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981), solidified his legacy as a symbol of nationalism. His remarkable performances and compelling screen presence made a lasting impact. Among his other notable works are Patthar Ke Sanam, Shor, Sanyasi, and Roti Kapda Aur Makan.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over his passing, acknowledging his significant influence on Indian cinema. She remarked that his patriotic films instilled national pride and would continue to inspire future generations. She also extended her condolences to his family and admirers.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar also mourned the loss, highlighting Kumar’s contributions to Indian culture. He emphasized that the actor’s work in patriotic cinema would remain a source of inspiration for generations.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute to the late actor, stating that his cinematic legacy would endure through his timeless films. He praised Kumar’s ability to infuse patriotism into his storytelling, particularly in classics like Upkar and Purab Aur Paschim, which resonated deeply with audiences across generations.
