Index Numbers of Wholesale Price in India for the Month of June, 2025, Drop in Food and Fuel Prices

India’s annual Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation declined to -0.13% in June 2025 compared to June 2024, according to the latest data released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This is the first negative year-on-year inflation in recent months, signaling a deflationary trend.

The drop is largely attributed to a fall in prices of food articles, mineral oils, crude petroleum and natural gas, and basic metals.

Month-on-Month WPI Also Records Decline

The month-over-month (MoM) change in WPI for June 2025 stood at -0.19%, compared to -0.06% in May 2025. This continues the downward trend observed since April 2025, driven primarily by falling prices in the fuel and power category.

Major Group-wise Performance in June 2025

• Primary Articles (Weight: 22.62%)
  The index rose by 0.81% in June 2025 from May, but the year-on-year inflation stood at -3.38%, owing to high base effects and price corrections.
  • Food articles: rose 0.82% MoM
  • Non-food articles: up 1.26% MoM
  • Minerals: increased 1.49% MoM
  • Crude petroleum & natural gas: declined 0.44% MoM
• Fuel & Power (Weight: 13.15%)
  This group registered a 2.52% decline MoM, led by sharp falls in:
  • Electricity: -9.10%
  • Mineral oils: -0.54%
  • Coal: -0.07%
• Manufactured Products (Weight: 64.23%)
  The index dropped marginally by 0.07% MoM. Out of 22 two-digit manufacturing groups:
  • 11 showed price rise, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, and machinery
  • 6 saw price decline, including basic metals, food products, and tobacco products
  • 5 had no change

The WPI Food Index (weight: 24.38%) rose slightly to 190.2 in June 2025 (from 189.5 in May), but the annual inflation dropped to -0.26%, down from 1.72% in May.

Product-Specific Price Movement Highlights

• Vegetables: YoY inflation fell by -22.65%
  • Potato: -32.67%
  • Onion: -33.49%
• Pulses: -14.09% YoY
• Fruits: Slightly positive at 1.59%
• Milk: rose 2.26% YoY
• Crude petroleum: -12.31% YoY
• Basic metals: -3.14% YoY
• Petrol & diesel (HSD): -6.57% and -5.12% respectively

The final WPI for April 2025 was revised to 154.2 with an inflation rate of 0.85%, reflecting minor upward adjustments.

The June 2025 WPI data has been compiled with a weighted response rate of 86.7%, while April’s final data had a 96.2% response rate. The next WPI release (for July 2025) is scheduled for August 14, 2025.

India’s wholesale inflation entering negative territory suggests softening commodity prices, especially in food and energy. While this offers relief to consumers, persistent deflation can also hint at weak demand, which may impact industrial recovery and policy decisions in the near term.
