Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil Reviews Ganga and Yamuna E-Flow

Published on

New Delhi: Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil chaired a high-level meeting in the national capital to review the environmental flow (e-flow) of the Ganga River and its key tributary, the Yamuna. The session focused on improving river health, maintaining ecological balance, and ensuring sustainable water management.

Call for Holistic River Management

Minister Patil emphasized the need to develop a robust and integrated action plan to enhance water flow across rivers. He stressed that protecting river ecosystems requires strategic interventions, especially in areas with excessive water consumption and pollution.

Reviewing the Current E-Flow Framework

The Minister highlighted the importance of evaluating whether the existing e-flow mechanisms are adequate or need augmentation to effectively preserve the Yamuna’s ecological integrity. The need for data-driven assessments and revised standards was echoed in the discussions.

Coordinated Efforts to Safeguard River Ecosystems

During the meeting, stakeholders agreed on the urgency of coordinated and sustained efforts to ensure uninterrupted environmental flow, address water stress, and reduce pollution in heavily affected regions. Patil underscored that e-flow management is central to the sustainability of riverine systems.

This review marks a renewed push by the Ministry of Jal Shakti to enhance water governance and protect India’s vital rivers through long-term, science-backed planning.
