Afghanistan Earthquake Kills 812, Over 2800 Injured; PM Modi Offers Aid

At least 812 people were killed and more than 2,800 injured after a powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan in the dead of night, causing widespread destruction. The Afghan government confirmed the death toll and announced the creation of a special committee to coordinate rescue operations. It has also allocated 100 million Afghanis for immediate relief, according to government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences over the tragedy, extending India’s readiness to provide all possible humanitarian aid to the affected people. “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands ready to provide humanitarian relief and support,” PM Modi said on X.

Afghanistan Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 812

The Afghanistan earthquake struck at 11:47 p.m. local time, registering 6.0 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located about 27 km east-northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province. Tremors were felt across Kabul and as far as Islamabad, more than 350 km away, forcing residents to flee their homes in panic.

The quake triggered landslides and flooding in the mountainous region, making rescue and relief operations more difficult. Entire villages in Kunar province have been flattened, with thousands left homeless.

Worst-Hit Provinces in Eastern Afghanistan

Kunar province bore the heaviest destruction. In Nurgal district’s Mazar Dara, Chawkay, Watapur, Manogi, Chapa Dara, and surrounding areas, 800 deaths and 2,500 injuries were reported.

Other provinces also suffered severe damage:

  • Nangarhar’s Dara-i-Noor district: 12 dead, 255 injured.
  • Laghman’s Alingar district: 58 injured.
  • Nuristan’s Nurgram district: 4 injured.
  • Panjshir’s Abshar district: five houses destroyed, no casualties.

International Aid and Rescue Operations Underway

The Afghan government confirmed that international humanitarian agencies have stepped in to provide assistance. Emergency medical teams, food supplies, and temporary shelters are being rushed to the worst-hit districts.

Rescue efforts continue amid fears of more casualties as several people remain trapped under debris. Aftershocks have further complicated relief operations, forcing survivors to stay outdoors in harsh conditions.

PM Modi’s Condolences and India’s Humanitarian Support

Reacting swiftly to the disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and pledged India’s support to Afghanistan during this crisis. He underlined that India is prepared to extend all possible aid, including medical relief and essential supplies.

This reflects India’s continuing commitment to regional humanitarian support, especially in times of natural calamities.
