PM Modi Meets Vladimir Putin in Tianjin, Calls for Peaceful Resolution of Ukraine Conflict

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. The meeting was described by the Indian Prime Minister as “excellent,” with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation and the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

In a post shared on X, PM Modi said the India-Russia partnership continues to be a vital pillar of regional and global stability. He expressed his eagerness to welcome President Putin to India later this year for the 23rd Annual Bilateral Summit, highlighting the importance of this longstanding relationship.

India-Russia Partnership Remains Strong and Strategic

During the meeting, PM Modi emphasized that India and Russia have always shared a Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, even during the most challenging times. He expressed that both nations have stood shoulder to shoulder, making their cooperation not only beneficial for their people but also for maintaining global peace and stability.

The leaders discussed deepening ties in sectors such as trade, fertilisers, security, culture, energy, and space. Modi added that India’s 1.4 billion citizens eagerly await President Putin’s visit to New Delhi for the summit in December 2025.

PM Modi Calls for Peaceful Resolution of Ukraine Conflict

One of the key topics during the bilateral dialogue was the Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance on the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. He welcomed the recent international peace efforts and called for all parties to work constructively toward a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

He stressed that ending hostilities and establishing lasting peace is not only essential for the countries involved but also represents the call of humanity as a whole.

Tianjin Summit Strengthens Bilateral and Regional Cooperation

The bilateral meeting between Modi and Putin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin highlighted mutual commitment to building stronger cooperation in the economic, financial, and energy sectors. Both leaders expressed satisfaction at the progress achieved in recent years, underlining the sustained growth of the relationship.

According to a readout of the meeting, the discussions extended to wider regional and global developments, showing that India and Russia remain aligned on key international issues.

Putin’s Upcoming Visit to India for 23rd Annual Summit

In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi extended a warm invitation to President Putin for the 23rd Annual Bilateral Summit, scheduled to take place in India in December. He mentioned that this summit will further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

The Ministry of External Affairs also confirmed that the leaders’ meeting focused on reinforcing India-Russia ties, with special emphasis on boosting cooperation across multiple sectors and supporting global peace initiatives.
