New Delhi: The Bangladesh election results 2026 have drawn swift international reactions, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating Tarique Rahman for leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to what has been described as a decisive victory in the country’s parliamentary elections.

In a message posted on social media platform X on Friday, Modi said the outcome reflected the confidence of the Bangladeshi people in Tarique Rahman’s leadership and reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.

PM Modi Signals Strong India–Bangladesh Partnership

“I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership,” Modi wrote.

BNP Claims Decisive Mandate in Parliamentary Polls

According to unofficial results cited by local media, the BNP and its alliance have secured a commanding majority in the 13th parliamentary elections. The alliance is reported to have won 210 seats, clearing the way for the formation of a new government under its leadership.

Bangladeshi Bengali daily Jugantor, citing party sources, reported that BNP chairman Tarique Rahman is set to lead the next government. If confirmed, this would mark the return of a male Prime Minister in Bangladesh after nearly 35 years.

Constituency-Level Results Highlight Strong Performance

Unofficial constituency-wise results further underline the scale of BNP’s victory. In the Dhaka-17 seat, Tarique Rahman reportedly secured 72,699 votes, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate S.M. Khaliduzzaman, who polled 68,300 votes, according to Prothom Alo.

Dhaka Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury declared that voting took place across 125 centres, including postal ballots, with Tarique winning by a margin of 4,399 votes.

Tarique was also unofficially elected from the Bogra-6 constituency, where he reportedly received 2,16,284 votes from 150 centres. His nearest rival, Jamaat candidate Abidur Rahman Sohel, secured 97,626 votes.

Background and Political Legacy

Earlier on polling day, Tarique expressed confidence in his party’s prospects after casting his vote at the Gulshan Model High School and College Centre in Dhaka. Speaking to reporters, he said the people of Bangladesh had been waiting for this electoral moment for more than a decade, according to news agency UNB.

Tarique Rahman is the son of former Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman, who founded the BNP and assumed the presidency in 1977. His mother, Khaleda Zia, served as Prime Minister during two tenures between 1991–1996 and 2001–2006.

With the BNP poised to return to power, regional observers are closely watching how the new leadership will shape Bangladesh’s domestic priorities and its relations with key partners, including India.
