Bharat Bandh on July 9: Nationwide Strike to Disrupt Banking, Transport, and Key Services

Published on

Over 25 crore workers from various sectors across India are expected to participate in a nationwide general strike (Bharat Bandh) on Wednesday, July 9, significantly affecting banking, transport, postal, and government services. The strike, backed by a coalition of 10 central trade unions, is being held in protest against what organisers call the government’s “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate” policies.

Who Is Participating?

The strike is being coordinated by leading trade unions including:

  • All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC)
  • Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC)
  • Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU)
  • Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS)
  • Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)
  • All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU)
  • United Trade Union Congress (UTUC), and others.

Affiliated unions from public and private sectors—including banking, coal mining, construction, postal services, and state transport—are expected to join. Preparations have been underway across sectors for days.

What Will Be Affected?

  1. Banking operations and ATMs
  2. Postal services
  3. Coal and factory operations
  4. Public sector units and central government departments
  5. State-run transport services

Schools and private offices may remain open in most areas, although disruptions are expected.

Why the Strike?

The unions have outlined multiple grievances:

  • Implementation of four controversial labour codes that allegedly reduce worker rights
  • Lack of employment opportunities and rising youth unemployment
  • Privatisation of public sector undertakings (PSUs)
  • Cuts in social spending on health, education, and public services
  • Government’s practice of rehiring retired personnel instead of recruiting young workers
  • No Indian Labour Conference in over a decade
  • Allegations of suppressing dissent and targeting migrant workers

Key Demands of Protesters

  1. Withdrawal of the four labour codes
  2. Job creation for the youth, particularly in Railways and PSUs
  3. Halt to PSU privatisation
  4. Universal social security and minimum wage guarantees
  5. Ban on contract-based employment
  6. Revival of the Indian Labour Conference
  7. Expansion of MGNREGA to urban areas
  8. Improved funding for health, education, and civic services

Farmers and Rural Workers Also Joining

According to Amarjeet Kaur of AITUC, rural workers and farmers across the country are expected to show solidarity by joining demonstrations, adding to the scope and scale of the bandh.
