  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Congress claims CBSE has acknowledged a compromise in its On Screen Marking (OSM) system.
  • The party has questioned the role of contractor COEMPT and changes made to tender conditions.
  • Opposition leaders are demanding greater transparency on cybersecurity safeguards and procurement practices.

New Delhi: The alleged CBSE OSM cybersecurity breach has triggered a fresh political controversy, with the Congress accusing the Centre of failing to safeguard a critical examination system used by millions of students. The opposition party has demanded accountability from the Ministry of Education and called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the issue.

CBSE OSM Cybersecurity Breach Raises Questions Over Digital Security

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that CBSE initially dismissed concerns about vulnerabilities in its On Screen Marking (OSM) platform before later acknowledging that the system had been compromised.

The OSM platform is a crucial part of CBSE’s examination process, enabling digital evaluation of answer scripts. Any security concern involving the platform raises questions about data protection, operational reliability and trust in the examination system.

According to Ramesh, the issue extends beyond cybersecurity and points to broader concerns about governance and oversight in public procurement.

Why the Contractor Controversy Matters

A key aspect of the controversy revolves around COEMPT, the contractor responsible for operating the system.

Ramesh alleged that CBSE’s original Request for Proposal (RFP), issued in August 2025, included provisions allowing the board to blacklist vendors that failed to meet performance standards. However, he claimed that a subsequent corrigendum removed those provisions before the contract was awarded.

The Congress leader argued that the change raises questions about whether safeguards were diluted at a critical stage of the procurement process.

While these allegations have intensified political debate, neither CBSE nor COEMPT had issued an immediate response to the latest claims at the time of reporting.

CBSE OSM Cybersecurity Breach Could Have Wider Implications

The controversy carries implications beyond politics. The OSM system supports the evaluation process for lakhs of students across India, making its security and integrity essential to maintaining public confidence in examinations.

If vulnerabilities in such systems are not addressed transparently, experts warn that concerns over digital governance, cybersecurity preparedness and educational administration could grow significantly.

The Congress has argued that students and parents deserve clear answers regarding the safeguards in place to protect examination-related data and processes.

Political Pressure Mounts on Education Ministry

Escalating his criticism, Ramesh accused the Ministry of Education of presiding over irregularities that he claimed have affected students’ mental well-being.

The Congress has demanded greater transparency regarding procurement decisions, cybersecurity measures and accountability mechanisms within the education system.

Meanwhile, CBSE has previously maintained that it remains committed to ensuring the security and integrity of its examination and evaluation infrastructure.

As the political dispute intensifies, attention is likely to remain focused on whether further disclosures, audits or official investigations emerge regarding the management and security of the CBSE’s digital evaluation ecosystem.
