Ceasefire Reached in Sweida After Deadly Clashes; Israel Strikes Condemned by Syria, UN
Damascus: A new ceasefire agreement has been reached between Syrian interim authorities and the Druze community in the southern province of Sweida, following four days of deadly violence that claimed at least 248 lives.
According to a statement from Syria’s Interior Ministry, the agreement involves a complete halt to military operations, the deployment of internal security checkpoints, and the restoration of full government functions in the province. The Spiritual Druze leader has also confirmed the truce, signaling a potential end to the escalating conflict.
Clashes Sparked by Attack on Druze Youth
The recent unrest began when a young Druze man was beaten and robbed at a makeshift checkpoint run by armed Bedouins. The incident led to a wave of retaliatory kidnappings and fierce clashes involving Druze militias, Bedouin tribes, and Syrian interim forces.
Local sources reported intense street battles and widespread disruption across Sweida before the ceasefire was negotiated.

Israeli Airstrikes in Sweida and Damascus Add to Tensions
In a parallel development, Israel launched multiple airstrikes in recent days, targeting military positions in Sweida and the capital, Damascus. Israeli officials claimed the strikes were aimed at protecting the Druze population, which has historical and cultural ties to the Druze community in Israel.
The Syrian government has strongly condemned the airstrikes, calling them a blatant violation of national sovereignty and international law. Several government buildings in Damascus were reportedly hit.
UN Chief Condemns Israeli Actions
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement denouncing the Israeli strikes, urging all parties to respect international law and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions further.
The situation remains fragile despite the ceasefire, with regional observers warning that external interference and underlying tribal tensions could jeopardize long-term stability in southern Syria.
