NEW DELHI: The Global Tiger Day 2026 celebrations highlighted India’s continued progress in wildlife conservation, with the country’s tiger population rising to 3,682 and the number of tiger reserves increasing to 58. Speaking at the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) event in New Delhi, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav said the achievements reflect sustained conservation efforts and stronger protection of India’s biodiversity.

The latest figures underline India’s position as home to the world’s largest wild tiger population and demonstrate the impact of long-term habitat conservation, anti-poaching measures and scientific wildlife management.

Global Tiger Day 2026 Highlights India’s Conservation Progress

Addressing the gathering, Yadav said wildlife conservation extends beyond protecting endangered species and requires society to strengthen its relationship with nature. He encouraged citizens to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles and support conservation efforts through greater awareness and participation.

The Minister noted that India has also expanded its network of elephant reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, community reserves and wetlands over the past 12 years, reflecting a broader commitment to ecosystem conservation.

During the programme, the NTCA Eco-tourism Portal was launched to provide information on all tiger reserves through a single platform. The website offers direct access to official safari and accommodation booking links, with the objective of encouraging responsible and sustainable tourism.

Conservation Focus Extends Beyond Tiger Numbers

Yadav said effective wildlife conservation depends on scientific research, traditional knowledge and the practical experience of forest officials working on the ground. He encouraged forest personnel to document field experiences to strengthen conservation planning and improve future policy decisions.

The Minister also emphasised capacity building for frontline staff and highlighted the role of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) in promoting international cooperation, knowledge sharing and best practices for the conservation of big cats.

Global Tiger Day 2026 Promotes Public Participation

The National Tiger Conservation Authority honoured wildlife officers and conservation professionals through the NTCA Awards for outstanding contributions to habitat protection and wildlife management.

The celebrations also included the release of several publications on tiger conservation, habitat assessment and protected area management. School students participated in painting, slogan-writing and awareness competitions under the ‘Save Tiger’ campaign, while Eco-clubs organised conservation activities to encourage greater public involvement in protecting India’s rich wildlife heritage.

Observed every year on July 29, Global Tiger Day aims to raise awareness about tiger conservation and strengthen international cooperation to protect tigers and their habitats, building on the goals adopted during the 2010 St. Petersburg Tiger Summit.
