NEW DELHI: Congress leaders, led by Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on Tuesday, demanding action over the alleged NEET paper leak and calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The demonstration took place at Lok Kalyan Marg after Congress MPs held a march from Rajaji Marg towards the Prime Minister’s residence. Delhi Police detained several party leaders during the protest.
Congress Escalates Protest Over NEET Paper Leak
Among those participating in the protest were K.C. Venugopal, Pawan Khera, Pariniti Shinde, Manickam Tagore and other Congress leaders. The party alleged that students protesting against the NEET paper leak had faced excessive police action a day earlier.
Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh, who also serves as Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, briefly visited the protest site and was seen speaking with Rahul Gandhi.
Congress MP K. Suresh, speaking after being detained, alleged that students had been subjected to harsh treatment and questioned the silence of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister on the issue.
Punjab Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi also criticised the BJP government during the protest, accusing it of failing to address students’ concerns.
Leaders Meet Injured Students, Government Holds Separate Talks
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and K.C. Venugopal met students who were injured during the police action in Delhi. The Congress reiterated its demand that the Centre accept responsibility for the alleged examination irregularities and sought the immediate resignation of the Education Minister.
Separately, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda visited Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital to meet injured protesters.
Nadda also said he had held discussions with a delegation of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) after the group submitted a written memorandum outlining its demands. According to the minister, the talks were conducted in a cordial atmosphere, and he appealed to the protesters to end their sit-in and cooperate with the administration.
CJP Lists Three Demands Before the Government
Following the meeting, CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the organisation had placed three principal demands before the government:
- Resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
- Compensation of ₹1 crore to the families of NEET aspirants who the group claims lost their lives.
- Government accountability over the alleged NEET paper leak.
The developments signal an intensifying political confrontation over the NEET controversy, with the Opposition continuing to press for accountability while the government has initiated dialogue with protesting groups. The issue is expected to remain at the centre of political debate in the ongoing Parliament session.
