Delhi Prepares for Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls, Date Awaited
New Delhi: The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has started groundwork for the upcoming special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, even though the official date of the exercise is yet to be announced. The initiative will involve the distribution of duplicate enumeration forms to voters for verification, ensuring that all eligible citizens are included and discrepancies in the rolls are corrected.
According to officials, voters whose names feature both in the 2002 rolls—when the last SIR was conducted in Delhi—and in the current list will be required to submit their verification forms along with the 2002 extract. In cases where the name of a voter does not appear in the 2002 records but their parents’ names do, the individual must provide identity proof along with the enumeration form and the relevant 2002 voter list extract.
Delhi gears up for special intensive revision of voter rolls
The Delhi CEO confirmed that the exercise is part of a nationwide plan initiated by the Election Commission to update electoral rolls. An election official emphasized the importance of ensuring that every eligible voter is included while also removing ineligible entries. Although some reports referred to identifying “illegal immigrants,” the official press note did not mention this specifically.
While a final notification is still awaited, sources have suggested that the SIR process may begin as early as October or could be postponed until January next year, depending on directives from the Election Commission.
Booth Level Officers to play key role in special intensive revision
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been deployed across constituencies, with efforts made to assign them to areas where they reside for better familiarity. Training sessions for Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) were conducted on September 15. Officials noted that rationalising polling stations is also part of the preparation to ensure smooth execution of the SIR drive.
Documents approved for voter verification
For verification purposes, twelve documents already approved for the SIR in Bihar will also be valid in Delhi. In addition, Aadhaar cards will be accepted in line with Supreme Court guidelines. Officials confirmed that the drive will extend over a two-month period, which will cover both verification and new enrolments.
Timeline and expectations for Delhi’s voter roll revision
The exercise is expected to significantly improve the accuracy of Delhi’s electoral database. Although the official schedule is pending, authorities are optimistic that preparations, including training and logistical planning, will ensure readiness once the date is declared.
