New Delhi: PMeVIDYA DTH 24×7 Channel No. 31 for Indian Sign Language (ISL) was launched today in New Delhi by Union Minister for Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan. Minister of State for Education Shri Jayant Chaudhary and Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) also attended the function.

Shri Pradhan highlighted how the legal framework became more comprehensive as a result of the recognized disabilities’ increase from 7 to 21. He pointed out that a move toward a more inclusive educational system is reflected in the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), which has made the education of children with special needs (CwSN) a priority in his address.

Shri Pradhan emphasized the significance of ISL by saying that alternate means of communication, like sign language, are essential to guaranteeing equal opportunity for everyone and that sound is not the only medium. In order to serve India’s hearing-impaired population, he advocated for ISL to be developed to international standards and widely adopted. He envisioned an increasing number of people studying ISL. He went on to say that this will also contribute to the creation of jobs.

Shri Pradhan further highlighted the enormous potential within the community of people with disabilities by pointing to the effect of ISL in cultural manifestations such as dance and theater and by citing examples of exceptional people. In order to harness this potential and promote communication, he referred to Channel 31 as a bridge that would make society more progressive and inclusive.

Since Channel 31 serves as a global doorway to Indian Sign Language and sets a standard for developing nations, he urged stakeholders to promote it and guarantee its spread throughout India. He said that by guaranteeing that all citizens have equal access to resources and education, this effort reinforces India’s commitment to constitutional rights.

In order to make Indian Sign Language (ISL) more widely available to the general public, a dedicated PM e-Vidya channel has been developed to promote ISL as a language and a topic taught in schools.

The Central and State Curriculum, teachers, teacher educators, and other stakeholders in the fields of career counseling, skill development, mental health, class-specific curriculum, communication skills, and the promotion of Sign Language as a language subject just like verbal languages like Hindi, English, etc. will all receive educational content from this 24-hour channel. Additionally, the material will be accessible on YouTube.
