Donald Trump Appoints Sergio Gor as New US Ambassador to India

Published on

Washington: US President Donald Trump has named his close aide Sergio Gor as the next US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.

Making the announcement on Truth Social, President Trump said that for “the most populous region of the world, I need someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda and help make America great again.” He praised Gor as a loyal ally, adding, “Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador.”

Gor’s Role in Trump Administration

Sergio Gor has been a key figure in the Trump administration, responsible for overseeing the vetting of senior personnel across government. Beyond politics, Gor shares close personal ties with the Trump family. He co-founded Winning Team Publishing with Donald Trump Jr., the company that has published two of Trump’s books.

Until Senate confirmation, Gor will continue serving in his current White House role.

Succession of Ambassadors

Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, who served as US Ambassador to India from May 11, 2023, to January 20, 2025. Prior to him, Kenneth Juster held the role from November 23, 2017, to January 20, 2021.

Since Garcetti’s exit earlier this year, the position has been overseen by Jorgan K. Andrews, the interim Charge d’Affaires, who has been leading the US Embassy in New Delhi since January 20, 2025.

Strategic Importance

The appointment of Sergio Gor comes at a crucial time for US-India relations, with both nations working closely on defense cooperation, trade, and technology partnerships amid shifting global dynamics in South and Central Asia.
