Dream11 Shuts Paid Games After Online Gaming Ban, Switches to Free Play Model

Published on

Fantasy sports giant Dream11 has officially shut down all its real-money gaming contests, shifting entirely to a free play model. The move follows the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, which bans all paid online games in India.

In a statement, Dream11 said, “We respect the law and will fully comply with the government’s decision. Progressive regulations would have been the right way forward, but we stand by the new framework.”

New law bans money-based online games in India

The Online Gaming Bill, 2025, passed by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha this week, prohibits all forms of real-money online games including fantasy sports, poker, and rummy. Only eSports and social gaming are allowed under the new law.

Violations could result in up to three years in prison or a fine of up to ₹1 crore. The bill also blocks advertisements, promotions, and financial transactions related to banned platforms.

The company reiterated that it has always followed the rules and will continue to operate responsibly within the new legal framework.

With Dream11 and other platforms forced to shut down their paid formats, the Indian online gaming industry faces a historic shift. Analysts believe this could push companies to focus more on eSports, advertising-driven models, and free play engagement.

The bill marks a turning point for India’s rapidly growing gaming sector, balancing concerns over youth addiction with the need for a regulated digital ecosystem.
