Dubai: Former Chief of Army Staff and President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf died on Sunday at the American Hospital in the United Arab Emirates after a prolonged illness, Daily Pakistan reported.

Musharraf was the 10th president of the South Asian country after a successful military coup in 1999. He served as the 10th Chairman of the Pakistan Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCSC) from 1998 to 2001 and as the 7th General-in-Chief from 1998 to 2007. Local media, citing members of his family, said the former four-star general had succumbed to amyloidosis.

According to reports, he was hospitalized for several weeks due to complications from the disease. Musharraf has been living in Dubai since 2016. The former president has been receiving treatment in the United Arab Emirates for the past eight years.

Earlier, Musharraf had expressed his wish to spend “the rest of his life” in his native country, local media reported. The Express Tribune newspaper reported that the former president wanted to return to Pakistan as soon as possible.
