Former Nepal PM Jhalanath Khanal’s Wife Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar Killed in Protest-Triggered Fire

Published on

Kathmandu: In a tragic escalation of the Gen Z protests in Nepal, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, has reportedly died after protesters set her house on fire.

According to Khabar Hub, a mob trapped Chitrakar inside the residence before setting it ablaze. She was rushed in critical condition to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment. However, there has been no official confirmation from authorities so far, and independent outlets have not verified the death.

Widespread Arson Targets Leaders’ Homes and Government Buildings

The development comes amid violent nationwide protests sweeping Nepal. Enraged demonstrators have targeted both government buildings and private residences of top leaders.

Among the buildings set ablaze:

  • Singha Durbar in Kathmandu, the seat of Nepal’s federal government
  • Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence
  • Private homes of President Ram Chandra Paudel, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and former Prime Ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Sher Bahadur Deuba

Party offices across the country have also been vandalized and burned.

Leaders Under Attack

Reports further indicate that former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, were assaulted when protesters stormed their residence. Videos circulating online show Deuba bloodied and injured as demonstrators dragged him and his wife out of their home.

Nepal in Crisis

The violent Gen Z movement, which began as a youth-led campaign against corruption and authoritarianism, has spiraled into one of Nepal’s most severe political and security crises in decades. With Prime Minister Oli resigning earlier today, the nation’s leadership is in disarray while mobs continue to rampage across major cities.

The death of Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, if confirmed, would mark one of the gravest personal tragedies in the wave of violence, highlighting how deeply the unrest has reached into Nepal’s political elite.
