The weather department has warned that the heavy rainfall is likely to continue until September 1, prolonging the crisis across the hill state. Except for Lahaul and Spiti, almost every district has received continuous rain since Sunday night, leading to large-scale disruptions in connectivity, education, and public safety.

Heavy rain in Himachal triggers landslides and highway damage

Sources confirmed that the Kiratpur–Manali National Highway has been blocked at multiple points due to landslides in Mandi district, particularly at Dwada and Jhalogi. Near Bindu Dhank, close to Manali, a major portion of the highway was washed away by the overflowing Beas River. The damage has left traffic between Mandi and Manali completely disrupted, stranding tourists and residents alike. Authorities have advised road users to avoid unnecessary travel, stressing that restoration work will only begin once the rain subsides and landslide debris is cleared.

Schools shut as administration takes precautionary steps

District administrations have ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Chamba, Kangra, Una, and Lahaul and Spiti. Additionally, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and the Kullu subdivisions of Banjar, Kullu, and Manali will see schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, DIETs, ITIs, polytechnics, and pharmacy institutes remain closed. Officials stated that the move was taken to ensure student safety amid rising risks of flash floods, landslides, and road blockages.

Evacuations in Manali and Mandi as rivers swell dangerously

The Manali district administration carried out late-night evacuations in Bahang and Alu Ground after the Beas River rose above the danger level. In a timely operation, a person trapped in a flooded building in Alu Ground was rescued safely. Residents in low-lying areas of both Mandi and Kullu have been warned to stay away from riverbanks for at least the next 24 hours, as the Beas and its tributaries remain swollen due to incessant rainfall. Officials emphasized that public safety is the top priority while rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), stay on high alert.

Red alert issued as rainfall disrupts life across the state

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall, lightning, and thunderstorms in Chamba, Mandi, and Kangra districts. A yellow alert remains in effect for the next two days, followed by an orange alert until September 1. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, 687 roads, including three national highways, are currently closed. Mandi district alone accounts for 319 road closures, followed by 131 in Kullu, 56 in Shimla, 54 in Sirmaur, and 27 in Solan. In addition, 2,349 power transformers and 234 water supply schemes have been severely disrupted, compounding the state’s struggle with widespread damage to infrastructure and public utilities.
