India begins development of E-Hansa, a next-gen two-seater electric trainer aircraft: Dr Jitendra Singh

Published on

India has officially begun the development of the Electric Hansa (E-Hansa), a next-generation two-seater electric trainer aircraft, as announced by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, during a high-level review meeting. The aircraft is being indigenously developed by the CSIR’s National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bengaluru and is expected to cost around ₹2 crore—about half the price of comparable imported models. E-Hansa is part of the broader HANSA-3 (NG) program, aimed at providing cost-effective, locally made pilot training solutions while promoting green aviation.

Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of promoting indigenous technologies and called for increased public-private partnerships. He urged the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) to adopt successful PPP models like DBT-BIRAC and IN-SPACe to enhance technology transfer and private investment. He advocated a hub-and-spoke PPP model, supported by AI-driven IP platforms and regional NTTOs, to widen outreach across sectors and regions.

The meeting also celebrated ISRO’s success with the SPADEX mission and its critical docking and undocking technology for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission. Dr. Singh praised ISRO’s involvement in Operation Sindoor and its collaboration with 40 ministries and 28 state governments. He also noted India’s role in the Axiom Space Mission, with Group Captain Subhash Shukla set to conduct microgravity experiments aboard the ISS.

Aligned with the Prime Minister’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision, Dr. Singh emphasized integrated planning through region-wise “Chintan Shivirs” and announced efforts to boost India’s biomanufacturing and attract global talent. He noted strong international interest in bilateral science collaborations and affirmed India’s growing leadership in science and technology. The meeting was attended by senior officials from CSIR, ISRO, DST, DBT, Earth Sciences, and other key scientific bodies.
