INDIA Bloc Protests in Parliament Against Voter Roll Revision in Bihar

Published on

New Delhi: Top leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Monday, voicing strong opposition to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar.

Senior Opposition Leaders Lead Fifth Day of Protest

Ahead of the parliamentary proceedings, several senior leaders from opposition parties gathered near the Makar Dwar of Parliament holding placards reading ‘Stop SIR’ and chanting slogans.

Among those present were Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, TMC’s Derek O’Brien and Sagarika Ghose, DMK’s Kanimozhi and A Raja, and leaders from the Left parties.

The protesting MPs held a large banner with the words “SIR – Attack on Democracy”, denouncing the EC’s move as a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters in Bihar.

Opposition Alleges EC Bias Ahead of Bihar Elections

Opposition parties allege that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is a targeted effort to manipulate the voter base ahead of upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar.

They claim the move is undemocratic and politically motivated, calling for an immediate rollback and open debate in both Houses of Parliament.

Earlier Protest Involved Tearing SIR Posters

On Friday, INDIA bloc leaders including Kharge and Rahul Gandhi had staged an unusual protest by tearing posters with ‘SIR’ written on them and placing them into a symbolic disposal bin, sending a strong visual message against the EC’s action. The protest was followed by a march inside the Parliament complex, further intensifying their demand for a rollback and formal discussion in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
