India Expands Operation Sindhu to Evacuate Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka from Conflict-Hit Iran

Published on

In a major show of regional cooperation, India has expanded Operation Sindhu, its ongoing evacuation mission from Iran, to include nationals from Nepal and Sri Lanka. This follows official requests from the governments of the two neighbouring countries, amid intensifying hostilities between Iran and Israel.

A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi in the early hours today, carrying Indian citizens evacuated from Iran. With this arrival, the total number of Indians brought back under Operation Sindhu has reached 517. Another flight, carrying 290 Indian nationals, had landed in New Delhi last night.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran will now oversee evacuation support for Nepalese and Sri Lankan nationals, who have been asked to reach out via dedicated Telegram channels or emergency helplines shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The embassy is also actively facilitating the movement of individuals from conflict-prone regions within Iran to safer locations, using all viable transport means. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of Indian nationals and now, those of friendly South Asian nations as well.

To aid communication and emergency support, 24×7 helplines have been activated both in Iran and in New Delhi.
