India Improves Rank in Global Climate Risk Index 2025

Published on

India has shown notable progress in the latest Global Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2025, released by Germanwatch, improving its resilience against climate disasters. The country now ranks 9th in the long-term index (1995–2024) and 15th in the 2024 annual index, compared to 8th and 10th last year. This marks a positive shift in India’s efforts toward disaster preparedness and climate adaptation.

Key Highlights from Global Climate Risk Index 2025

As per the report, India faced over 430 extreme weather events in the last three decades, causing more than 80,000 deaths and economic losses of nearly USD 170 billion. The data was presented during the UN Climate Summit (COP30) in Belem, Brazil. A lower ranking in the index signifies lower vulnerability, highlighting India’s strengthened climate risk management and policy response.

Global Impact of Extreme Weather Events

From 1995 to 2024, over 9,700 global weather-related disasters caused 832,000 fatalities and USD 4.5 trillion in losses. Small island nations like Dominica, Myanmar, and Honduras topped the list of most affected countries over the long term, while St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Chad led the 2024 rankings. Nearly 40% of the world’s population, including people in India and China, live in the most climate-vulnerable regions.

India’s history of extreme weather events includes Cyclones Hudhud (2014) and Amphan (2020), Uttarakhand floods (2013), and severe heatwaves in 1998, 2002, 2003, and 2015. Despite these challenges, the latest CRI results indicate better disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and post-disaster recovery mechanisms.

India’s Climate Strategy and Future Path

India’s improved ranking reflects ongoing efforts through programs like the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). These initiatives strengthen infrastructure resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable energy transition.

Experts emphasize that while India’s progress is commendable, sustained investments in green infrastructure, renewable energy, and community-based adaptation are essential to mitigate long-term risks. The CRI 2025 report reiterates that developing nations remain disproportionately impacted by climate change and require global support for resilience-building.
