Sharmishta Panoli, an Instagram influencer and law student from Pune, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram, Haryana, for allegedly sharing a video with communal undertones. The video, which criticised Bollywood actors for staying silent on India’s military action, Operation Sindoor, sparked widespread outrage online, quickly went viral, and led to threats and trolling.
Following the backlash, Panoli deleted the video and posted an apology. However, Kolkata Police had already filed a complaint and attempted to serve her and her family with legal notices—efforts reportedly hindered as she had distanced herself from them. A court subsequently issued an arrest warrant, leading to her arrest on Friday night.
Operation Sindoor was launched by India on May 7 following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, primarily tourists. The operation targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
