Justice Harish Tandon Appointed New Chief Justice of Orissa High Court

Orissa High Court: Justice Harish Tandon has been chosen as the new Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. His appointment follows the retirement of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19, 2024. Until the present day, Justice Arindam Sinha had served as acting Chief Justice.

On March 22, 2024, the Ministry of Law and Justice published an official notification of Justice Harish Tandon’s appointment. The statement noted that Justice Arindam Sinha, who has served as acting Chief Justice since January 19, had been transferred to the Allahabad High Court.

Supreme Court Collegium’s Recommendation for Justice Harish Tandon

The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, previously recommended Justice Harish Tandon for the position of Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. This suggestion was made on March 6, 2024, based on his seniority, experience, and legal competence.

Justice Harish Tandon Appointed New Chief Justice of Orissa High Court

Justice Harish Tandon received a law degree from Calcutta University in 1983. He became an advocate in 1989 and practiced primarily in civil cases in the Calcutta High Court.

Over the years, he has handled matters involving constitutional law, civil conflicts, commercial litigation, and property legislation. On April 13, 2010, he was appointed Judge of the Calcutta High Court, which marked the start of his judicial career. He has more than 14 years of experience as a judge and has rendered key decisions in a number of noteworthy cases.

Strengthening the Orissa High Court Justice Harish Tandon is anticipated to improve the efficiency of the Odisha legal system with his extensive experience in civil cases and constitutional law.

Maintaining Judiciary Stability following Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh’s retirement, the Orissa High Court needed a permanent Chief Justice, and his appointment came at a critical moment. It is anticipated that under his direction, the Orissa High Court’s judicial governance will be enhanced and outstanding cases will be expedited.
