Bollywood veteran Kajol has revealed her discomfort with the horror genre while promoting her upcoming film Maa, marking her first foray into supernatural cinema. The actor admitted she has never been a fan of horror films and plans to watch Maa only for professional purposes.
In an interview with PTI, Kajol candidly said, “I don’t watch horror films at all. I’ve only seen parts of Maa that had green screens and no music—just enough to avoid getting scared.”
Initially under the impression that working on a horror film would be similar to any other genre, Kajol soon realised the emotional toll it demanded. “There’s a unique pitch to horror acting. It’s not like rom-coms or dramas. Keeping that intense energy throughout the shoot was emotionally draining,” she added.
Interestingly, Maa wasn’t conceived as a horror movie. According to Kajol, the story grew beyond its original scope. “It didn’t start out as horror. But the script evolved so much that we needed a grander platform and a more intense ending, which naturally brought in the horror tag,” she explained.
The film, directed by Vishal Furia, was a learning curve for Kajol, involving action sequences, dramatic moments, and heavy VFX work. “I loved the music, and everything came together well. It was new but rewarding,” she shared.
While Kajol has taken on OTT projects like The Trial and Do Patti, she remains enchanted by the magic of cinema halls. “There’s still something magical about watching a movie in a theatre,” she said.
Maa stars Kajol as Ambika, a mother fighting to protect her daughter Shweta, and connects to the universe of Shaitaan (2023), which starred her husband Ajay Devgn. The film also features Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma, and Ronit Roy, and is presented by Jio Studios and Devgn Films.
