  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Kalbaisakhi rain in Odisha drenched nearly half the state.
  • Bhubaneswar and Cuttack witnessed heavy rain and dark daytime skies.
  • Yellow thunderstorm warning issued for five districts.

Bhubaneswar: Large parts of the state were battered by Kalbaisakhi rain in Odisha as an active low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal triggered widespread thunderstorms. Gusty winds, hailstorms, and intense rainfall disrupted normal life across several regions, with the Twin Cities experiencing unusually dark skies during daytime.

Meteorological officials have warned that more rain is likely over coastal and adjoining districts in the next 24 hours.

Twin Cities See Day Turn Into Night Amid Heavy Rain

Heavy rainfall lashed the Twin Cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, creating near-night-like conditions during the day. Winds gusting at speeds of 30–40 kmph were recorded at a few places, while isolated hailstorms were reported in some pockets.

Residents reported brief traffic disruptions and reduced visibility during peak rainfall hours.

Coastal and Northern Districts to Receive More Kalbaisakhi Rain

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, coastal Odisha and nearby districts are likely to witness further rainfall over the next 24 hours.

The western storm system will continue to impact Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Mayurbhanj districts. A yellow warning has been issued for five districts, forecasting thunderstorms and lightning activity today.

Cyclonic Circulation Influencing Weather Pattern

Weather officials said a cyclonic circulation is currently active over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north coastal Odisha at about 1.5 km above mean sea level. This system, combined with the low-pressure area, intensified thunderstorm activity across the region.

However, the low-pressure area is expected to weaken gradually.

Dry Weather Likely After System Weakens

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that as the system weakens, weather conditions across Odisha are likely to stabilise. After the current spell, dry weather is expected to prevail in most parts of the state in the coming days.

The Kalbaisakhi rain in Odisha brought much-needed relief from heat but also caused brief disruptions. With thunderstorms still expected in coastal districts, authorities have advised residents to remain alert untilconditions fully stabilise.
