Kerala to Build India’s First Underwater Tunnel Connecting Vypin and Fort Kochi

Published on

Kerala is set to construct its first underwater tunnel, linking Vypin and Fort Kochi, marking a significant milestone in the state’s coastal highway development. The ambitious project aims to transform travel across Kochi’s busy shipping channel by reducing the existing 16 km road journey to just 3 km beneath the Arabian Sea.

Kerala underwater tunnel Project Overview and Specifications

The tunnel project is estimated to cost ₹2,672 crore and will feature a 2.75 km twin-tube corridor, including 1.75 km of bored tunnels and 1 km of cut-and-cover sections. Each tube will have an outer diameter of 12.5 metres and an inner width of 11.25 metres, running 35 metres below sea level. Designed according to international safety norms, the structure will include emergency stops every 250 metres, escape routes every 500 metres, and a high-capacity ventilation system to ensure passenger safety.

Tunnel construction will employ Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), widely used worldwide for sub-sea and underground tunnels. Reinforced concrete segments will be used to withstand hydrostatic pressure and seismic activity, following global engineering standards.

Travel and Economic Benefits of the Kerala underwater tunnel

The new underwater corridor is expected to cut travel time by up to two hours, significantly easing congestion on ferry routes and long detours via the Goshree Bridge. Commuters between Fort Kochi and Ernakulam will be able to complete the journey in just 30 minutes, at an estimated cost of ₹50–₹100, compared to the current average of ₹300. Monthly commuting costs are projected to decrease by nearly ₹1,500 per passenger, boosting convenience and affordability.

This tunnel forms a vital part of Kerala’s coastal highway project, which will connect Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod, enhancing the state’s infrastructure and economic efficiency.

Decision to Opt for Tunnel Over Bridge

Earlier proposals for an overbridge across the Cochin Port shipping channel were abandoned after technical and financial assessments. A bridge would have required extreme height to allow ship movement and extensive land acquisition, making it impractical. In contrast, the tunnel requires only 100 metres of land on each side, providing a cost-effective and feasible solution. Kerala’s underwater tunnel will follow the example of India’s first underwater metro tunnel under the Hooghly River for Kolkata Metro in 2017.

Timeline and Implementation of Kerala underwater tunnel

The Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has been instructed to invite Expressions of Interest (EOI) from firms to execute the project. Construction is expected to take approximately 30 months, with an additional 18 months for land acquisition. If the project begins by April 2025, officials anticipate completion by September 2027, marking a transformative step in Kerala’s transport infrastructure and coastal connectivity.
