Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, on Wednesday held a series of meetings in Bhubaneswar to address the grievances of backward class communities in Odisha. During his visit, Ahir also met Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at the Lok Seva Bhavan and held detailed discussions on issues concerning the socio-economic upliftment of OBCs in the state.
NCBC Chief Urged Odisha For Fresh Census Of OBC Communities
Representatives from over 50 backward class communities met the NCBC chairperson and submitted memorandums demanding that the Odisha government conduct a fresh census of Other Backward Classes (OBCs). They also sought 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in both education and employment, as per national guidelines.
Senior BJD leader and former minister Ranendra Pratap Swain highlighted that despite forming over half of Odisha’s population, OBCs are deprived of their rightful 27 per cent quota due to lack of updated and quantifiable data. He said that the absence of such data has made it difficult for OBCs to defend their claims in legal forums.
Leaders Demand Inclusion Of Khandayats In OBC List
Senior Congress leader Suresh Kumar Routray made a strong plea for including Khandayats in the OBC list. He said that the community is primarily dependent on agriculture and allied activities and should be recognized for their socio-economic backwardness.
Routray elaborated that Khandayats, historically known as a Kshatriya and peasant militia caste, were warriors serving princely states during the British era. Although recognized as socially and economically backward in Odisha, they are not yet included in the central OBC list.
Supporting this, Ashok Baral, general secretary of the Nikhila Odisha Khandayat Kshyatri Paika Mahasangha, added that while some members of the community have been listed as OBCs by the state, the majority still await inclusion based on their social, economic, and educational conditions.
NCBC Reviews OBC Representation In Government Sectors
Ahir assured the delegations that their grievances would be examined and urged the state government to take proactive steps in recommending communities for inclusion in the backward class list.
The National Commission for Backward Classes also reviewed the representation of OBCs in both state and central public sector undertakings. Ahir emphasized that ensuring fair representation in these sectors is crucial for promoting equality and development among marginalized communities in Odisha.
