Odisha Assembly Commotion, Congress MLAs Yelled Slogans

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly Commotion: On Tuesday (March 25, 2025), the Odisha Assembly witnessed commotion as opposition MLAs played gongs and yelled slogans in protest of different problems, prompting Speaker Surama Padhy to delay the proceedings twice until 12.01 p.m.

With the assembly’s sessions routinely disrupted, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi called an all-party meeting to address the issue.

As soon as the House met for the day, BJD and Congress members marched into the well, holding placards, playing musical instruments, and raising slogans.

While BJD members raised slogans demanding proportionate reservation for ST, SC, and OBC students in educational institutions and jobs, Congress MLAs called for the formation of a House Committee to investigate incidents of violence against women that occurred in the nine months following the BJP’s election.

Congress members beat gongs and cymbals while playing flutes, producing a lot of noise in the House. Speaker Padhy urged the agitating members to return to their seats, but it had no effect.

“Yesterday, the deputy speaker in a ruling has instructed that the members cannot bring musical instruments to the House. However, you (Congress MLAs) are playing them today. This is not acceptable,” she said.

In the midst of the chaos, the Speaker adjourned the House until 11.30 a.m., then again for 30 minutes till 12.01 p.m. The House adjourned in less than a minute after it began.

After the House adjourned, Congress members staged a sit-in beside the Mahatma Gandhi statue on the Assembly grounds, while BJD legislators gathered near the entrance gate and yelled slogans while carrying placards seeking reservation for ST, SC, and OBC students in educational institutions.
