Odisha CM Launches ‘Shakti Shree Yojana’ to Boost Safety and Empowerment of Girl Students
Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to enhance safety and empowerment for young women, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday launched the ‘Shakti Shree Yojana’—a dedicated initiative focused on the well-being of girl students in higher educational institutions across the state.
Safety Empowerment Cells in Colleges and Universities
Under the new scheme, Safety Empowerment Cells will be established in all colleges and universities. These Cells will be managed by female students themselves, encouraging peer-led vigilance, leadership, and support networks. The initiative is designed to create a culture of self-reliance and community-based safety awareness.
Role of ‘Shakti Appa’ Mentors
To strengthen the program further, each institution will have five women mentors, referred to as “Shakti Appa,” appointed by respective district collectors. These mentors will guide students on safety issues, emotional well-being, and mental health.
24×7 Mobile App for Real-Time Help
A key component of the Shakti Shree Yojana is a 24×7 mobile application allowing students to report incidents of harassment or psychological distress in real time. The app ensures instant intervention by authorities, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to student safety and mental health.
Mental Health Education and National Helpline Support
The scheme also integrates a six-day mental health education module into the college curriculum. This module will be linked to the national Tele-MANAS helpline, ensuring that students have direct access to certified counselors and psychological support services.
CM Majhi: “Empowerment Begins with Awareness and Support”
Speaking at the launch event, CM Majhi emphasized that Shakti Shree Yojana is more than a safety initiative. “It is about creating a culture of awareness, resilience, and empowerment among our young women. The government stands firmly with them,” he said.
The initiative comes at a time when safety concerns for women are at the forefront in Odisha, especially following recent tragic incidents that have sparked public and political reactions statewide.
