Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati has sought a comprehensive report on the shocking incident involving a second-year Integrated B.Ed. student of FM (Autonomous) College in Balasore, who allegedly attempted self-immolation due to continued harassment by the college’s Head of Education Department, Samira Kumar Sahu.
Governor Personally Engages With Authorities
Dr. Kambhampati informed that he has spoken directly with Odisha’s Higher Education Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, to understand the circumstances that led to the distressing incident. He urged the minister to ensure prompt action and accountability.
“The Minister assured that the issue is being handled seriously and that necessary measures are already underway,” stated the Governor in a post on social media platform X.
The student, who is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, is being closely monitored. The Governor also contacted the Director of AIIMS to check on her medical condition and confirmed that a team of specialists from AIIMS Delhi has been involved in her care.
“I pray to Lord Jagannath for her speedy recovery and strength. I hope she returns to good health soon,” he added in his statement.
Highlighting the importance of mental health and student safety, Dr. Kambhampati stressed that educational institutions must prioritize the well-being and dignity of students.
“The safety, mental well-being, and dignity of students must be protected at all times. I have urged authorities to act with urgency, empathy, and responsibility to prevent such incidents in the future,” the Governor emphasized.

The incident has sent shockwaves across Odisha’s academic circles, raising concerns about the mental health challenges faced by students and the need for robust grievance redressal mechanisms in educational institutions.
