Odisha Launches First Public Breastfeeding Centre in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: In a major step toward supporting maternal health, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Wednesday inaugurated Odisha’s first breastfeeding centre at the State Commission for Women in Bhubaneswar. The initiative was launched as part of the state-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week.

Parida, who also holds the Women and Child Development (WCD) portfolio, announced that the government plans to establish more Odisha breastfeeding centres at key public spaces such as railway stations, bus terminals, markets, and government offices to provide mothers a safe and private space to nurse their babies.

The Odisha breastfeeding centre model will feature dedicated female attendants at railway stations to assist nursing mothers. Similar facilities are expected at major markets like Unit I and Unit IV, and in shopping malls—frequented by a high percentage of female visitors. Parida emphasized the importance of such infrastructure to promote women’s health and well-being.

She further highlighted the health benefits of breastfeeding—not just for babies, but also for mothers—including reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers and improved mental health. Stressing the emotional bonding between mother and child, she called for collective societal support to normalize breastfeeding in public.

Additionally, Parida launched the Lok Kalyan App—an online registration platform for NGOs to collaborate with the Odisha State Social Welfare Board (OSSWB). The app, developed by the WCD department, aims to enhance transparency, inclusiveness, and coordination in women’s welfare programs.

WCD Principal Secretary Shubha Sarma and Director Monisha Banerjee were also present at the event.
