Bhubaneswar: In a move to ease urban congestion and boost industrial connectivity, the Odisha government has announced an ambitious plan to construct heavy vehicle corridors and bypass roads across key cities, alongside a 6-lane expressway project in Cuttack.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the Construction Department is actively working towards building a stronger road infrastructure, aligning with Vision 2036 to transform Odisha into a progressive and well-connected state.
10 Bypasses Under Construction
Currently, 10 bypass roads covering 48 km are under construction with a total estimated cost of ₹1,49,290.85 lakh. Additionally, 6 more bypasses spanning 32 km have been approved for FY 2025-26 with a budget of ₹27,791.57 lakh.
Cuttack’s 6-Lane Expressways to Cut Travel Time
Two 6-lane expressways near Cuttack’s Khannagar and Jobra are in progress and are expected to reduce traffic congestion in the city by up to 60 minutes.
Key Bypass Projects in the Pipeline
- Dhenkanal-Kamakhyanagar Bypass (7.7 km): Will reduce congestion in busy market zones and save 15 minutes of travel time.
- Berhampur Ring Road (13 km): Expected to reduce traffic and cut travel time by 30 minutes.
- Belpahad Bypass, Jharsuguda (8 km, 4-lane): Will ease congestion in Belpahad town.
- Bhawanipatna Link Road (6 km): To improve city-village connectivity.
- Pattamundai Bypass, Kendrapara (4 km) and Bhubaneswar Inner Ring Road (5.5 km): Will decongest local roads and boost trade.
- Siling Brahmanipal Bypass, Keonjhar and roads connecting Khurda, Tamand Chhaka, and Paikarapur are also under construction.
Newly Approved Bypass Projects
- Balangir Bypass (6.8 km): Will connect NH-26 and SH-42, facilitating movement of heavy vehicles.
- Patnagarh Bypass (8.5 km): Aims to reduce accidents, noise pollution and enhance connectivity between Balangir, Patnagarh, Khariar Town, and Kantabanji.
- Paralakhemundi Bypass (4 km)
- Kamakhyanagar Gengutia Bypass (3 km)
- Dhenkanal Mahulpada Bypass
8 km Cuttack-Athagarh Outer Ring Road Approved
One of the key highlights is the approval for an 8 km Outer Ring Road connecting Cuttack and Athagarh. This road will:
- Improve access to Anshupa Lake, Dhabaleshwar, Bhatarika, and Singhanath Peeth
- Enhance connectivity to major industries like TS Alloys, KVK Nilachal Power, Aarti Steels, Pradhan Steel, and AMTECH Metal
“With these projects, the state government aims to reduce traffic congestion, promote industrial growth, and strengthen tourism and trade,” said Law, Works, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan. “A well-planned road network will be a game-changer for Odisha’s growth journey.”
