Odisha Weather Alert: IMD Warns of Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms for Next 7 Days

Published on

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert across Odisha for the next seven days, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in several districts. The alert follows the formation of a depression over northwest Madhya Pradesh and southwest Uttar Pradesh, which is currently influencing weather patterns across eastern India.

According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, a monsoon trough stretching from Bikaner (Rajasthan) to the northeast Bay of Bengal—passing through Odisha—is contributing to the unstable weather. Furthermore, a fresh low-pressure system is likely to develop over the North Bay of Bengal around July 24, which could further intensify rainfall across the state.

Rainfall Forecast Overview

  • Day 1 (Until 8:30 AM, July 19):
Light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are likely in several areas. Isolated districts such as Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Kalahandi, and Mayurbhanj may witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph).
  • Days 2–5 (July 19–22):
Rainfall is expected to intensify, especially over interior Odisha. Districts like Rayagada, Kandhamal, Koraput, and Gajapati could see heavy showers and thunderstorms. Coastal regions will receive moderate rain with occasional gusts.
  • Day 6 (July 23):
Rainfall likely at most locations across the state, with isolated heavy showers possible.
  • Day 7 (July 24):
Rain intensity is forecast to peak, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at select locations due to the predicted low-pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal.

Public Advisory

The IMD has advised people in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain alert and stay tuned to official updates. Farmers, fishermen, and residents in vulnerable zones are urged to take precautionary measures against possible lightning, waterlogging, and gusty winds.
