Opposition Uproar Paralyzes Parliament: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Adjourned for the Day

Published on

New Delhi: The functioning of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha was severely affected today due to loud protests and slogan-shouting by the opposition parties, leading to their adjournment for the day. The uproar centred around demands for discussion on Operation Sindoor and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, along with other pressing matters.

Lok Sabha Proceedings Halted Repeatedly

The Lok Sabha witnessed continuous disruptions throughout the day.

  • At 11 AM, as the House assembled, opposition MPs created a ruckus, demanding discussion on key issues.
  • Speaker Om Birla urged them to allow Question Hour, which was to address farmers’ concerns. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also appealed for cooperation, stressing the importance of these questions.
  • The House was adjourned till 12 noon.

When the House resumed:

  • Opposition members again began sloganeering and stormed into the well of the House.
  • Presiding Officer Jagdambika Pal made repeated appeals for calm, while MoS for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal assured that the government was ready for a debate under rules.
  • The Chair informed that 16 hours were allotted for the debate on Operation Sindoor as per the Business Advisory Committee’s decision.
  • However, due to continued pandemonium, the House was adjourned till 2 PM.

In the afternoon session:

  • The same protests resumed, prompting Presiding Officer to reiterate calls for peace and assure a scheduled discussion.
  • Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the disruption, saying the opposition was not interested in discussion despite the government’s readiness.
  • As the uproar persisted, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day.

Rajya Sabha Mirrors Lok Sabha Chaos

Similar scenes unfolded in the Rajya Sabha, where the opposition—including the Congress, DMK, RJD, and Samajwadi Party—demanded immediate discussions on Bihar’s voter list revision and Operation Sindoor.

  • At 11 AM, protests broke out as the House met.
  • Deputy Chairman Harivansh urged the members to allow proceedings, but the house was adjourned till 12 noon.

At 12 noon, disruptions resumed:

  • Presiding Officer Ghanshyam Tiwari attempted to begin Question Hour, but could not proceed due to the din.
  • During the session, the Home Ministry’s notification regarding Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation was also read out.
  • The House was adjourned till 2 PM, and upon reconvening, continued unrest forced an adjournment for the rest of the day.

Today’s Parliament proceedings were dominated by protests and disruptions, stalling crucial discussions. Despite assurances from the government to hold a 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor, the opposition persisted with its demand for immediate deliberations, leading to a complete adjournment of both Houses.
