New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-nation visit starting tomorrow, with stops in the United Kingdom and Maldives, aimed at strengthening India’s strategic partnerships and advancing bilateral cooperation.
UK Visit: Talks with PM Keir Starmer, King Charles, and Business Leaders
During the two-day official visit to the UK, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to:
- Hold discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
- Call on King Charles III
- Engage with top India-UK business leaders
Briefing the media, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that this would be PM Modi’s fourth visit to the UK, and it offers an opportunity for both nations to review the full scope of bilateral relations. Discussions will cover regional and global developments, and a shared vision for deeper collaboration.
The India-UK Partnership was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. Key pillars include:
- Business and Trade: Bilateral trade crossed $55 billion in 2023–24
- Investment: The UK is the 6th largest investor in India, while India is a key source of FDI for the UK
- Education: University of Southampton became the first foreign university to open a campus in India under the New Education Policy
- Green Infrastructure: The UK-India Infrastructure Financing Bridge supports finance mobilisation for renewable energy projects
- Defence, Research and Innovation: Regular defence interactions and strong R&D collaboration continue
Maldives Visit: Strengthening Neighbourhood First Policy
Following his UK visit, PM Modi will travel to the Maldives from July 25–26 at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu.
Key highlights of the visit:
- PM Modi will be the Guest of Honour at Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26
- This will mark the first visit by a head of state or government to Maldives during President Muizzu’s tenure
- It will also be PM Modi’s third visit to Maldives
Foreign Secretary Misri reaffirmed that Maldives is a key partner in India’s Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR. India remains the first responder to the Maldives in times of crisis and continues to support its development goals.
Bilateral highlights:
- Trade Volume: Nearing $500 million
- Proposed Agreements: Free Trade Agreement and Investment Treaty under discussion
- Emerging Focus Areas: Renewable energy, fisheries, and infrastructure development
India remains one of the largest development partners for Maldives, with ongoing initiatives and high-level engagements reinforcing strong bilateral ties.
