Pakistan Recall Shadab Khan for Sri Lanka T20Is, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi Stay in BBL

Pakistan name 15-member squad for January 2026 Sri Lanka T20I series, prioritising bench strength over senior stars ahead of T20 World Cup

New Delhi: Pakistan have announced their squad for next month’s T20 International series against Sri Lanka, recalling all-rounder Shadab Khan while opting not to bring back senior players Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi from the ongoing Big Bash League in Australia. The three-match series is scheduled to begin on January 7, 2026, and will be led by Salman Ali Agha.

The decision signals a clear intent by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to rely on its available bench strength, even as the series is seen as an important preparatory phase ahead of the T20 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka early next year.

Pakistan T20I squad vs Sri Lanka: Shadab Khan Returns After Injury Layoff

Shadab Khan makes his return to the national side after being out of action since June following shoulder surgery. The all-rounder recently resumed competitive cricket in the Big Bash League, where his performances have reportedly been stronger than those of his fellow Pakistani players.

His recall adds balance and experience to the squad, particularly in Sri Lankan conditions, where spin and all-round capabilities often play a crucial role. The selectors appear confident that Shadab’s fitness and form will strengthen the middle order and bowling attack during the series.

Senior Stars Continue in Big Bash League

Despite being available, Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, and Muhammad Rizwan have not been recalled and will continue their commitments in the Big Bash League. All five players had earlier informed the PCB that they were willing to return if required for national duty.

However, the board had already assured Cricket Australia that Pakistani players signed for the BBL would remain available for the full season. Based on that commitment, the PCB decided that the Sri Lanka series could be managed without disrupting those arrangements.

Pakistan T20I squad vs Sri Lanka: Selection Calls Raise Eyebrows

The squad selection includes uncapped batter Khawaja Nafay and the recall of Abdul Samad, with no other major surprises in the 15-member lineup. Nafay’s inclusion has drawn attention, as he has not been a standout performer even at the domestic level.

This decision comes at a crucial time, with the T20 World Cup approaching and Pakistan scheduled to play all their matches in Sri Lanka. Senior players had reportedly conveyed to the board that participating in the series would help them adapt to local conditions, making their absence a notable talking point.

Focus on Bench Strength Ahead of T20 World Cup

By sticking with a largely second-string squad, the selectors appear focused on testing depth and giving opportunities to fringe players. The approach suggests a long-term view, even if it means missing the chance to field a full-strength side in conditions similar to those expected during the World Cup.

With Salman Ali Agha leading the side, the Sri Lanka series will serve as a critical test for Pakistan’s squad depth and readiness as they look ahead to a demanding international calendar in 2026.

Pakistan Squad for Sri Lanka T20Is:
Salman Ali Agha (c), Abdul Samad, Saim Ayub, Sahabzada Farhan, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Muhammad Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq, Usman Khan, Khawaja Nafay, Naseem Shah, Salman Mirza, Muhammad Waseem Jr.
