Piyush Chawla Announces Retirement After Two-Decade Career

Published on

Former India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has officially retired from professional cricket after a career spanning over 20 years. The 36-year-old played three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20 Internationals, with his last international appearance coming at the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Chawla’s final domestic outing was in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a tournament he played hoping to make a comeback in IPL 2025. However, he went unsold at the mega auction in November and later contributed as part of ESPNcricinfo’s coverage during the tournament.

IPL Career of Piyush Chawla

During his IPL career, Chawla featured in 192 matches across four franchises—Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians—taking 192 wickets. A highlight of his IPL tenure was the 2014 season, where he famously hit the winning runs to secure Kolkata Knight Riders’ second IPL title in three years. He last played in the IPL for Mumbai Indians in 2024 and ranks as the fourth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history.

Chawla first gained attention as a 16-year-old when he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar with a googly in the 2005 Challenger Trophy. He made his Test debut against England in 2006 and was part of India’s Under-19 World Cup squad alongside future stars like Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.

His career peaked between 2007 and 2011, during which he was part of India’s victorious squads in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, as well as the 2008 tri-series win in Australia.

In domestic cricket, Chawla represented Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, taking 446 wickets in 137 first-class matches.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Chawla expressed gratitude to his coaches and reflected on his career highlights, saying cricket will always remain close to his heart as he embarks on a new journey.
