Prime Minister Narendra Modi today described Mauritius as an important pillar of India’s Neighbourhood First policy and Vision ‘SAGAR’, while announcing a Special Economic Package for Mauritius during talks with visiting Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam in Varanasi.
In his statement, PM Modi emphasized that India and Mauritius may be two nations, but their dreams and destiny are one. He congratulated Mauritius on the finalisation of the Chagos Archipelago agreement, under which the UK ceded sovereignty to Mauritius.
India Mauritius Special Economic Package Unveiled
PM Modi announced that the package includes several landmark projects such as the first Jan Aushadhi Center outside India, a 500-bed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, and an AYUSH Centre of Excellence. India will also assist in building a Veterinary School and Animal Hospital in Mauritius.
The two countries will further collaborate on major infrastructure projects, including the Chagos Marine Protected Area, setting up an ATC tower at SSR International Airport, and expansion of highways and ring roads. PM Modi underlined that this economic package is not mere assistance, but an investment in a shared future.
Advancing Energy, Digital, and Financial Cooperation
Highlighting energy cooperation, PM Modi announced that India is supporting Mauritius in its transition to clean energy. India is providing 100 electric buses, with 10 already delivered, and will assist in constructing a 17.5 MW floating solar power plant at Tamarind Falls.
Digital and financial ties are also deepening, with the successful launch of UPI and RuPay in Mauritius last year. Both countries have now agreed to work towards enabling trade in local currencies.
Strengthening Education and Skill Development
More than 5,000 Mauritian citizens have received training in India, and 500 civil servants are being trained under the Mussoorie program. India’s IIT Madras and Indian Institute of Plantation Management have signed MoUs with the University of Mauritius for research and innovation partnerships.
In addition, both sides agreed to establish a Directorate of Science and Technology in Mauritius, and to introduce Mission Karmayogi training modules for Mauritian officials.
India Mauritius Special Economic Package Enhances Maritime Security
A free, open, secure, stable, and prosperous Indian Ocean remains a shared priority. India reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen maritime security in Mauritius’ Exclusive Economic Zone.
Mauritius’ Coast Guard Ship is being refitted in India, while 120 of its officers are undergoing training. A five-year cooperation agreement on hydrography has been signed, covering joint surveys, navigation charts, and hydrographic data sharing.
The two leaders also paid tribute to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam on his 125th birth anniversary, celebrating him as both the father of Mauritius and a symbol of the deep and unbreakable bond between the two nations.
