PM Modi Inaugurates ₹4900 Crore Infrastructure Projects in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a series of development projects worth over ₹4,900 crore in Tamil Nadu, marking a major push for infrastructure, connectivity, tourism, and green energy in the southern state.

During his visit, PM Modi inaugurated key projects related to airports, highways, railways, ports, and power transmission, emphasizing Tamil Nadu’s growing importance as a regional trade and industrial hub.

New Terminal at Tuticorin Airport

• A new terminal building covering 17,340 sq. meters was inaugurated.
• Built at a cost of ₹450 crore, it will serve 20 lakh passengers annually, expandable to 25 lakh.
• Equipped with GRIHA-4 rating standards, LED lighting, energy-efficient systems, and eco-friendly sewage treatment.

Highway Projects

1. 4-laning of 50 km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram section of NH-36 under the Vikravandi–Thanjavur corridor, costing over ₹2,350 crore.
2. 6-laning of 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, worth around ₹200 crore, aimed at reducing logistics costs and improving port-linked industrial connectivity.

Port Development

• North Cargo Berth-III at V.O. Chidambaranar Port launched with a handling capacity of 6.96 MMTPA, built at ₹285 crore.
• Designed to enhance dry bulk cargo handling and overall port efficiency.

Railway Infrastructure Upgrades

• Electrification of the Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line (90 km) to boost eco-friendly transport.
• Doubling of Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari section (21 km) under a ₹650 crore project to improve Kerala-Tamil Nadu rail links.
• Additional doubling works on Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction (12.87 km) and Tirunelveli–Melappalayam (3.6 km) sections.

Power Transmission

• PM laid the foundation stone for Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) to evacuate power from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4 (2×1000 MW) — vital for strengthening Tamil Nadu’s grid.

At a special ceremony in Gangaikonda Cholapuram, PM Modi released a commemorative coin honouring Emperor Rajendra Chola I during the Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival. The event marks 1,000 years since the emperor’s legendary sea expedition to Southeast Asia and the laying of the foundation of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple.

PM Modi praised Rajendra Chola as a visionary leader whose maritime prowess and cultural legacy strengthened India’s historical links with Southeast Asia.

• Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan
• Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi
• Senior government and railway officials

PM Modi’s Statement

In an X post before the event, PM Modi wrote:

“A chain of crucial infrastructure projects will be dedicated to the nation today. This includes the new terminal building of Tuticorin Airport, which will be a game-changer for trade and connectivity in southern Tamil Nadu.”
