PM Modi SCO Summit 2025: Prime Minister Lands in China After Japan Visit

Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in Tianjin, China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, following a two-day visit to Japan.

During his Japan tour, PM Modi, accompanied by Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, travelled by bullet train to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture to visit a semiconductor plant. He also met governors of 16 prefectures in Tokyo, highlighting the “great potential for cooperation” in trade, innovation, startups, technology, and AI.

PM Modi SCO Summit 2025: Visit Follows Japan Tour

During his Japan trip, PM Modi, accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, travelled on a bullet train to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture to inspect a semiconductor facility. He also interacted with governors of 16 prefectures in Tokyo, stressing that cooperation between Indian states and Japanese prefectures could unlock new opportunities in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, startups, and artificial intelligence.

Bilateral Meetings with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin Expected

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that PM Modi will hold two crucial bilateral meetings during the SCO Summit—one with Chinese President Xi Jinping and another with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders, along with other heads of member states, will join the summit. India’s participation comes shortly after the U.S. imposed steep tariffs, including a 25% duty on crude oil imports from Russia to India.

India’s Role and Engagement in the SCO

India became a full member of the SCO in 2017 after being an observer since 2005. Over the years, India has chaired multiple SCO councils and played an active role in strengthening multilateral cooperation. The grouping currently includes ten members—India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Belarus, and five Central Asian nations. The Tianjin Summit is viewed as crucial for India to enhance regional ties and push its strategic vision.

First China Visit Since Galwan Valley Clash

This is PM Modi’s first trip to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. In recent months, India and China have taken steps to ease tensions, including resuming trade through Himalayan passes, restarting discussions on air connectivity, and facilitating visa processes for businesses, tourists, and media personnel. Both sides have also expressed commitment to multilateralism and cooperation in building a rules-based global trading system.

PM Modi concluded his Japan visit by calling it “highly productive” and expressed optimism that India-Japan relations will continue to reach “new heights” in the coming years.
