Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also honoured the freedom fighters, recalling the spirit of 1942 when Mahatma Gandhi gave the historic ‘Do or Die’ call. “In 1942, the Father of the Nation initiated the Quit India Movement against British rule, which infused new enthusiasm into the fight for independence. Under the Indian National Congress’s leadership, countless Indians took to the streets, writing an unforgettable saga in history,” Kharge posted on X.

Kharge further said that on August Revolution Day, the nation pays heartfelt tributes to all those who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence.

Historical Significance of the Quit India Movement

Launched on August 9, 1942, during World War II, the Quit India Movement anniversary marks one of India’s most significant turning points in the struggle for independence. Gandhi’s call for an “orderly British withdrawal” from India was accompanied by a mass non-violent protest, beginning from Gawalia Tank in Mumbai.

The movement made it clear to the British that continuing their rule in India was no longer possible, forcing them to consider ways to leave the country. Gandhi’s powerful “Do or Die” slogan became a rallying cry for millions of Indians determined to secure freedom.

Every year, August 9 is observed as August Kranti Day to honour the sacrifices and legacy of the movement that shaped India’s destiny.
